CMU Insights @ Canadian Music Week
April 2017, Toronto | SESSION INFO | SESSION NOTES
CMU Insights returned to Toronto to present The Creators’ Guide To Digital Dollars, a three hour session that explained how streaming services are licensed; discussed challenges around data, converting freemium and driving sustained listening; and delved into the big transparency debate.

CMU Insights @ Tallinn Music Week

CMU Insights presented a session at Tallinn Music Week for the first time. We provided a ten step guide to digital licensing, and then discussed ongoing issues with the streaming business with artist manager and 311.ee founder Toomas Olljum and Pieces Of 8 Music founder James Morgan. Malena Wolfer from Believe then explained how artists and labels can capitalise on the data that comes out of the streaming platforms.

CMU Insights @ Output 2017

CMU Insights returned to the Output conference in Belfast to present two sessions: ‘The Top Five Things Music PRs Do Wrong’ and ‘The Top Five Streaming Developments In 2017’. CMU Business Editor Chris Cooke led sessions on music PR and the streaming music market, with input from Clash Magazine’s Simon Harper, Polydor/Totem’s Naomi Williams, Spotify’s Bryan Johnson and Sammy Andrews.

CMU Insights @ Slush Music 2016

CMU Insights’ Chris Cooke presented a speedy overview of ‘Dissecting The Digital Dollar’ at the first edition of Slush Music, the music-centric strand of the Slush start-up conference. He also sat on a panel discussing the state of the music rights sector in the digital age and led a session featuring artists who invest in start-up businesses.

‘The Politics Of Licensing’ discussed the latest developments in Europe and the US around safe harbours, collective and music licensing, as well as developments in the way music companies license digital services and broadcasters. CMU Insights kicked things off with a ‘story so far’ presentation.

CMU Insights @ Dansk Live Autumn Conference 2016

CMU Insights’ Chris Cooke presented a keynote overview of the digital music market at the Autumn Conference of Dansk Live, considering growth in the streaming sector and challenges ahead for both labels and artists. The session then discussed the potential of the streaming platforms as data and marketing platforms for the wider music community, and how the live sector might tap into those resources, while also noting some streaming services’ move into ticketing and the continued potential of direct-to-fan.
