A half-day masterclass on the streaming business | supported by MMF & Lewis Silkin


Based on the ‘Dissecting The Digital Dollar’ research undertaken by CMU Insights for the Music Managers Forum UK, this half day masterclass provides a comprehensive overview of the streaming business, how digital services are licensed, and the key issues with the current model.

The masterclass includes:

1. An up-to-date overview of the streaming market today – which streaming services are dominating where?

2. The copyright basics you need to know to understand how digital licensing works, including…
• The key music rights.
• The copyright controls.
• The role of collective licensing.
• Where performer rights and performer ER fit in.

3. An outline of the deals a streaming service needs to secure from the record labels, music publishers and collecting societies.

4. An explanation of the key elements of each streaming deal and how royalties are calculated and paid.

5. An overview of the key issues with the streaming business, including…
• How royalties are shared out between the music community.
• Whether performer ER should be paid on streams.
• How bad music data delays payment.
• The need for more transparency.
• The need to sign up more premium users.
• The challenge of driving sustained listening.

This masterclass is led by Chris Cooke, MD and Business Editor of CMU. Chris has written about the music business daily for over fifteen years and is a leading expert on the sector, often speaking about best practice and current trends at conferences and events around the world.

He also has hands-on experience working on music and marketing projects involving artists, labels, brands and media, and authored the ‘Dissecting The Digital Dollar’ reports for the UK’s Music Managers Forum. With degrees in English and Law, Chris is an experienced trainer who also has expertise in media, marketing, PR and communications.

Published prices include VAT and booking fees. Refunds are available on CMU Insights bookings made via Eventbrite up to 30 days before the seminar. After that date bookings are non-refundable, though a place can be transferred to another person. Payment must be made before attendance unless otherwise arranged. If, for any reason, a course is postponed or cancelled CMU Insights will let each participant know by email (via the email address used in the booking) and affected participants will have the option to move their booking to another course or to take a full refund.
