CMU Business Editor Chris Cooke presented the extended version of ‘Digital Dollar In Ten Steps’ at Music Connected 2016. The ten steps are as follows…
STEP 01: There are two sets of music rights.
STEP 02: Each copyright comes with a number of controls.
STEP 03: The music industry licenses directly or collectively.
STEP 04: Streaming exploits both reproduction rights and performing rights.
STEP 05: Record labels usually license digital services directly.
STEP 06: Publishers sometimes license digital direct and sometimes license collectively.
STEP 07: Streaming deals are ultimately revenue share deals.
STEP 08: But there are other elements to the deal.
STEP 09: Label provides the content – but the service needs to pay the publisher too.
STEP 10: There are plenty of debates to be had around the digital dollar.
